What Are The Top 5 Countries For Digital Nomads In 2024?
Ep 025: Affordability, Culture and Quality Of Life.
You finally decided to become a digital nomad.
It's no longer a question of whether you should, but rather when, how, and where.
So let’s start with the first things first.
Location, location, location—finding the perfect starting point to live and work as a digital nomad is crucial. All countries on the planet are beautiful but not all are suitable candidates for a digital nomad life. So today I want to give you my personal choice if I were a digital nomad newbie and had to choose where to start.
But before I do, I just want to share a little bit of history about my own hometown in Germany
Barbarossas Legacy
I arrived a little bit over a week ago to visit my parents and I thought I would make a YouTube video about something interesting about the place I grew up in.
King Barbarossa, who once had his residency here on top of Mount Hohenstaufen in southern Germany,
You know the guy who went on the crusades to Israel to fight the infidels ?
Yeah, that guy.
So here it is. Enjoy:
Top Five Countries for Digital Nomads in 2024
Over the past two years, I've been exploring various countries in Southeast Asia, searching for the perfect balance that makes a country ideal for digital nomads.
If you're new to the digital nomad lifestyle, you'll want to strike a balance based on three main factors: cost of living, connectivity, and overall quality of life.
Surprisingly, only one country from Latin America made it onto my list. The main reasons are the rising insecurity and increasing costs in many places, like Mexico and Chile, which make them less appealing despite their rich cultures.
Let’s dive right into it.
1. Indonesia (Bali)
Why Bali? Bali, Indonesia, has long been my favorite for digital nomads, and with that choice, I am not alone.
Mt Agung, Sidemen Bali 2024
The island offers a unique blend of natural beauty, a vibrant culture, and a welcoming community of like-minded individuals.
Nowhere else do you get a comparable bang for your buck
Key Highlights:
Cost of Living: Bali is affordable, with plenty of budget-friendly options for accommodation and dining.
Internet Connectivity: Most co-working spaces and cafes offer reliable high-speed internet.
Community: Bali has a thriving digital nomad community, particularly in areas like Canggu and Ubud.
Quality of Life: From stunning beaches to serene rice paddies, Bali provides a peaceful and inspiring environment. There is just no other place like it with a comparable amount of stunning cafes where you can sit down and enjoy a drink and write your daily journal.
Downside: Overcrowding and Infrastructure Strain Bali's popularity has led to overcrowding in some areas, which can strain local infrastructure. Traffic congestion and inconsistent public services are common issues, especially in popular spots like Canggu and Ubud.

2. Thailand
Why Thailand? Thailand offers a diverse range of experiences, from bustling cities to tranquil beaches, making it an attractive destination for digital nomads.
Thailand is unique. There is a reason why I have been coming back so many times and it goes beyond just the phenomenal Thai Food! 😃
Sanctuary of Truth, Pattaya, Thailand, 2023
Key Highlights:
Cost of Living: Thailand is known for its low cost of living, especially in cities like Chiang Mai and Bangkok.
Infrastructure: Excellent infrastructure with numerous co-working spaces and modern amenities.
Culture and Cuisine: Rich cultural heritage and world-renowned cuisine.
Community: Established expat and digital nomad communities provide ample networking opportunities.
Downside: Visa Complications Thailand's visa regulations for long-term stays can be complex and frequently change. Digital nomads often find it challenging to navigate the visa process, requiring frequent visa runs or applications for specific long-term visas.
“The goal is to free yourself from work as the default setting and create your own rules. Digital nomadism is about using technology to work remotely and live freely.”
Tim Ferris (The 4-hour work week)
3. Vietnam
Why Vietnam? Vietnam's fast growth, low cost of living, and long history make it a great place for remote workers.
What surprised me the most was the level of development. If you are from the west, you might believe that the nation is not as developed because communists run it. That is simply not true.
Vietnam is actually very sophisticated.
Key Highlights:
Cost of Living: Vietnam is extremely budget-friendly, with affordable housing and food.
Internet Connectivity: Reliable internet pretty much everywhere
Cultural Experience: A unique blend of traditional and modern influences, particularly in the north of Vietnam, has stunning landscapes and natural beauty to offer. Food is also amazing!
My favorite spot is Sapa
Vibrant Cities: Energetic urban centers with a mix of work and leisure activities.
Downside: Language Barrier. English is not widely spoken outside of tourist areas and major cities, which can make everyday communication and navigation challenging. This barrier can also impact finding local services and resolving issues efficiently.

4. Philippines
Why the Philippines? The Philippines offers a unique mix of beautiful landscapes, warm hospitality, and an English-speaking population, making it easy for digital nomads to adapt.
Amazingly, the country has 7,000 islands, so there is a lot to see!
Gift of God, Manila 2022
Also, the mix of spanish, english and asian culture makes it a fascinating country. I really love the warm filipino mentality since it reminds me a lot of Latin America, where I spent 20 years of my life.
Key Highlights:
Language: English is widely spoken, simplifying communication.
Natural Beauty: Stunning beaches and islands are ideal for a work-life balance.
Affordability: Cost of living is a bit higher but still low, particularly outside major urban centers
Downside: Internet Connectivity Issues. The Philippines does have some internet blindspots and underdeveloped infrastructure in general. This can be frustrating for digital nomads who need consistent, high-speed internet to work efficiently.
While this isn’t an issue in Manila or Cebu, on the island it very well can be a major problem. El Nido even has electricity problems, with regular and even scheduled blackouts every few days.
5. Colombia
Why Colombia? Colombia is emerging as a top destination for digital nomads, offering vibrant cities and a rich cultural experience.
Photo by Ricardo Gomez Angel on Unsplash
Colombia also recently launched a VISA program for digital nomads; it is good for up to two years. If you want to extend their stay beyond 180 days, you must depart and re-enter the country or apply for a different form of visa.
Key Highlights:
Cost of Living: Colombia provides a high quality of life at a reasonable cost.
Climate: pleasant climate year-round in cities like Medellín, known as the “City of Eternal Spring.”
Community: Increasing number of digital nomads and co-working spaces.
Cultural vibrancy: a dynamic cultural scene with music, art, and festivals.
Downside: Security Concerns While Colombia has improved significantly in terms of safety, there are still areas where security is a concern. Issues such as petty crime and occasional civil unrest mean that digital nomads need to stay vigilant, especially in larger cities.
Conclusion
These five countries—Indonesia (Bali), Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, and Colombia—are leading the way as top destinations for digital nomads in 2024.
Each offers a unique blend of affordability, connectivity, and cultural richness, making them ideal for those looking to combine work and travel.
Whether you’re drawn to the beaches of Bali or the urban energy of Medellín, these countries provide the perfect backdrop for a fulfilling remote work experience.
These cannabis gummies keep selling out in 2023
If you've ever struggled to enjoy cannabis due to the harshness of smoking or vaping, you're not alone. That’s why these new cannabis gummies caught our eye.
Mood is an online dispensary that has invented a “joint within a gummy” that’s extremely potent yet federally-legal. Their gummies are formulated to tap into the human body’s endocannabinoid system.
Although this system was discovered in the 1990’s, farmers and scientists at Mood were among the first to figure out how to tap into it with cannabis gummies. Just 1 of their rapid onset THC gummies can get you feeling right within 5 minutes!
